Culture in VR and AR
In these early AR experiments, the work tracks an image of my mouth within a projected video of my morning bathroom routine. It shows the small, private moment of talking to myself in the mirror while getting ready for the day. As my mouth moves, it triggers projectiles of culturally significant objects that shoot out toward the viewer. The objects come directly from the act of speaking, turning a quiet, everyday ritual into something interactive. The work plays with the idea that culture is carried through our bodies, habits, and the way we talk to ourselves. It takes a simple moment in front of the mirror and turns it into a space where identity, objects, and language collide.
6:30AM is my first digital work and a VR experience based on the early morning exercise sessions at the park next to my house in Malaysia. At sunrise, uncles and aunties come out of their homes and gather to do group exercises together. It is a simple routine but it creates a strong sense of community. Living in London, this was something I really missed.
In 6:30AM, I tried to capture the feeling of those mornings and turn it into something interactive. The VR experience gamifies the movements and rhythm of the group exercises, sharing that energy with the viewer. This was also the first time I started making the objects that later appear across many of my digital works. The early versions show up in this piece and became the starting point for ideas I continued to develop later on.
